About

Art therapy meets traditional counseling in the practice of Christina Brown, M.S., LPC, ATR, CSOTP, a multifaceted therapist who brings a unique blend of creativity and clinical expertise to her work. As both a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Art Therapist, Christina employs a diverse range of therapeutic approaches to support healing, transformation, wellness, and growth in her clients.

Christina's therapeutic process is deeply person-centered, considering each individual's strengths, needs, comfort level, life experience, age, gender, culture, heritage, language, beliefs, and identity. She skillfully integrates traditional "talk therapy" with art and play therapy, utilizing image-making and the creative process as powerful tools for self-expression and healing. Her approach may incorporate various modalities, including positive psychology, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), solution-focused therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family systems, supportive therapy, and psychoanalysis.

With a career in mental health spanning over a decade, Christina's expertise encompasses a wide range of specialties. She excels in working with young children (ages 3-6) and adults with intellectual disabilities, addressing issues such as stress, life transitions, sexually harmful/reactive behaviors, trauma, mood disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, and elimination disorders. Her unique certification as a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider further enhances her ability to work with complex cases involving sexually harmful or reactive behaviors.

Christina's journey in the mental health field began in 2009 when she started providing supportive services to young adults and elderly individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and coexisting disorders in day support and group home settings. Her educational background is as diverse as her therapeutic approach, with an AAA in Studio Arts from TCC's Visual Arts Center (2013), a BS in Psychology from Regent University (2012), and a dual MS in Art Therapy and Counseling from EVMS (2015).

Throughout her career, Christina has gained valuable experience in various settings, including inpatient psychiatric units, schools, and behavioral health centers. A notable highlight of her professional journey was her trip to Haiti with EVMS in 2014, where she provided "art as therapy" services to over 400 orphaned children, demonstrating her commitment to using her skills to make a difference in diverse communities. From 2015 to 2018, she focused on providing specialized therapy within a residential setting to youth with intellectual disabilities, mood disorders, and co-occurring sexually harmful/reactive/addictive behaviors, often working with individuals involved in the juvenile justice system or foster care.

Since 2018, Christina has continued to offer outpatient therapy services to children, adolescents, and adults in the Hampton Roads Community. Her extensive experience, coupled with her creative approach to therapy, makes her a valuable resource for individuals seeking a therapist who can adapt to their unique needs and help them navigate life's challenges with innovative and effective therapeutic techniques.
