Emily Soukhanouvong
Psy.D. • Licensed Psychologist
About
As a second-generation Southeast Asian American raised in a family of immigrants from Laos, Dr. Emily Soukhanouvong brings a unique multicultural perspective to her work as a licensed psychologist at ChangeWell Psych. Her passion for understanding the human experience in diverse contexts fuels her approach to therapy, which combines cultural sensitivity with evidence-based practices.
Dr. Soukhanouvong specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), applying its principles of balance between acceptance and change in her sessions. Her therapeutic style emphasizes a "both/and" rather than an "either/or" approach, allowing clients to explore complex emotions and experiences. She works primarily with adolescents (14+) and adults, addressing a range of concerns including anxiety, depression, self-injurious behaviors, life transitions, obsessions and compulsive behaviors, emerging adulthood issues, and multicultural identity challenges.
With extensive training in various evidence-based treatments, Dr. Soukhanouvong's expertise extends to Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and Attachment Based Family Therapy. She holds a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) in Clinical Psychology from Regent University, where her dissertation focused on Ethnic Identity and Perceived Discrimination Among Generations of Asian Americans. Her academic background is complemented by a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Dr. Soukhanouvong's professional journey includes a pre-doctoral internship at Broughton State Hospital and a post-doctoral fellowship specializing in Comprehensive DBT and ERP at Potomac Behavior Solutions. She has also contributed to the field through various presentations and publications, addressing topics such as compassion fatigue, mental health in refugee populations, and cultural diversity in therapy.
In her sessions, clients can expect a blend of professional expertise and personal understanding. Dr. Soukhanouvong's approach ensures that she doesn't assume to know everything about a client's history, experience, or personal beliefs, instead creating a space for open exploration and growth. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys playing tennis, nurturing plants, engaging in arts and crafts, and exploring different cuisines – interests that reflect her holistic approach to life and well-being.
