Driven by a passion for understanding the human mind and helping others, he pursued advanced studies at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. There, he obtained both his Master of Arts in Psychology and his Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D.) from their APA-accredited program, solidifying his foundation in evidence-based psychological practices.

The culmination of Dr. Nelson-Johnson's formal training was an APA-accredited doctoral internship at Iowa State University, where he honed his clinical skills and expanded his therapeutic toolkit. This experience proved invaluable, as it led to his role as a Staff Psychologist and Group Therapy Coordinator at Iowa State University's Student Counseling Service (SCS). In this position, Dr. Nelson-Johnson further developed his expertise in group dynamics and collaborative therapeutic approaches.

Prior to establishing his practice in Wisconsin, Dr. Nelson-Johnson and his partner embarked on an innovative venture, opening a mind-body center in Ames, Iowa.
