About

For Scott J. Leenan, MS, LPC, CRC, becoming human is not a discovery but a creative project. This philosophy underpins his unique approach to psychotherapy, which draws from a diverse range of modalities including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), positive psychology, narrative therapy, and existentialism. As the Executive Director of Intown Counseling & Wellness, Scott has cultivated a therapeutic environment where clients are encouraged to actively shape their own identities and futures.

Scott's therapeutic journey with clients begins by exploring their personal values, priorities, beliefs, goals, and perceptions of reality. He places a strong emphasis on stress management, personal growth and development, finding purpose, and cultivating balance and motivation. In every encounter, Scott seeks to understand what his clients want and need out of life, helping them pursue these goals through active listening, teaching, and encouragement. This client-centered approach has been the cornerstone of his practice since 2007 when he established his private group practice.

A significant aspect of Scott's work involves leading dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills groups. These groups integrate various effective treatments, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), assertiveness training, validation strategies, and Buddhist mindfulness. Through these sessions, individuals learn to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, practice mindfulness, and improve interpersonal communication. This comprehensive approach reflects Scott's commitment to providing holistic care that addresses multiple facets of mental health and personal development.

Scott's extensive professional background informs his current practice. Prior to establishing his own practice, he worked at Peachford Behavioral Hospital in Dunwoody and Talbott Recovery Campus, an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center. His experience extends to assisting licensed psychologists with psychological, psycho-educational, and forensic evaluations, as well as administering and interpreting a wide array of psychological assessments. This diverse background enables Scott to provide comprehensive care that addresses a wide range of mental health concerns.

Education and continuous learning are central to Scott's practice. He received his master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from Georgia State University and has pursued additional specialized training throughout his career. Notably, he was intensively trained in DBT under the direction of Dr. Michael Maslar, director of the mindfulness and behavior therapies clinic at Northwestern University. Scott has also studied cognitively-based compassion training (CBCT) through the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, further enriching his therapeutic toolkit. His commitment to the field extends to mentoring and supervising new counselors, having previously held the role of certified professional counselor supervisor (CPCS).

At Intown Counseling & Wellness, clients can expect a therapeutic experience that is both professionally grounded and personally transformative. Scott's approach, honed over years of diverse experience and continuous learning, offers a unique blend of evidence-based practices and philosophical depth. Whether addressing anxiety, depression, addiction, or seeking personal growth, clients will find in Scott a dedicated partner in their journey towards creating a more fulfilling and authentic life.
