About
Life is full of contradictions and complementary qualities, and navigating these inconsistencies can be both challenging and enlightening. This understanding forms the foundation of Dr. Andrea DePetris's approach to therapy. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Supervising Psychologist at Therapists of New York, Dr. DePetris offers a unique blend of psychodynamic orientation and holistic wellness coaching to help clients gain clarity, express themselves authentically, and claim a fuller experience of life.
Dr. DePetris's practice is rooted in the belief that while our formative life experiences shape our perceptions, they are not a path of predetermination but rather a source of wisdom and strength. As a Black, biracial psychologist, she is especially attuned to the multidimensionality of individuals and their layers of identity – including those that are socially-imposed and those that are self-affirmed. This multicultural lens informs her work with clients from diverse backgrounds, allowing her to address the complex interplay between mental health, physical well-being, emotions, spiritual needs, and social contexts.
With over a decade of experience, Dr. DePetris has honed her expertise in several specialized areas. She is trained in traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder, emotionally-focused therapy for couples, and cognitive behavioral therapy for substance abuse, insomnia, chronic pain, and weight loss. Her approach is further enriched by her experience as a Kripalu Yoga Instructor and her studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, allowing her to offer a truly holistic approach to mental health and wellness.
Dr. DePetris earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut, where she received awards for her research on mental health stigma, racial discrimination, biracial identity development, social identity, and social inequity. Her clinical training includes placements at prestigious institutions such as the Cambridge Health Alliance Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research, the University of Connecticut Psychological Services Clinic, and the Veteran Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System. She previously served as a staff psychologist and the Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Yale Health, Mental Health & Counseling, and continues to hold an academic appointment at the Yale University School of Medicine.
In her practice, Dr. DePetris creates a space where clients can explore their emotional wounds, conflictual attachments, and life stressors. Whether clients are seeking greater self-understanding, improved relationships, or practical guidance for managing intense feelings and difficult circumstances, Dr. DePetris tailors her approach to meet their unique needs. By combining her psychodynamic orientation with wellness coaching, she offers a comprehensive therapeutic experience that addresses both the psychological and physiological aspects of well-being, empowering clients to make meaningful changes in their lives.
