LMFT • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
About
Embracing the full spectrum of human emotions is at the core of Brad Akin's therapeutic approach. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #103280), Brad encourages his clients to explore and understand their feelings without judgment or criticism, recognizing that each emotion serves a purpose in the human experience.
Brad's practice is rooted in the belief that authentic growth and meaningful connection can be achieved by validating and understanding one's emotional landscape. He works collaboratively with clients to explore how their current ways of being might be contributing to issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction, or fear. His goal is to help clients find new, authentic ways to thrive that align with their true selves.
With over a decade of experience, Brad brings a wealth of knowledge to his practice. He has worked extensively with the LGBTQIA+ community, including couples, immigrants, teenagers, adults, seniors, and transgender and gender non-conforming clients. His areas of expertise encompass a wide range, including adoption issues, coming out processes, early life trauma, parenting challenges, and navigating intimate and open relationships.
Brad's therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing from psychodynamic exploration, cognitive behavior modification, and narrative insight. He infuses his practice with cultural awareness and sensitivity, ensuring that each client's unique background and experiences are honored in the therapeutic process. His work is further informed by his life experiences, including his 28-year relationship, fatherhood, and involvement in civil rights activism.
After a successful career in high tech, Brad made a pivotal transition to the field of Counseling Psychology. He earned his M.A. from John F. Kennedy University, embarking on a journey that would lead him to become a full-time, licensed psychotherapist. This career shift adds a unique perspective to his practice, allowing him to understand the challenges of major life transitions and career changes.
For those seeking a therapist who values authenticity, embraces the complexity of human emotions, and is committed to fostering meaningful growth, Brad Akin offers a safe and nurturing space. His approach is not about quick fixes, but about empowering clients to understand themselves deeply and find solutions that are truly their own.
