With a unique blend of military experience and mental health expertise, Sakira Colvin brings a wealth of insight to her role as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. As a former Air Force officer with 10 years of service, including deployment to Iraq, Sakira has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by veterans and applies these insights to help clients address their mental health issues.
Sakira believes in approaching mental health conversations with the same openness and importance as discussing any other aspect of life. She creates a welcoming, non-judgmental environment where clients can freely express themselves, viewing her role not just as a listener, but as a collaborator in growth. Together with her clients, Sakira explores thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, working towards enhancing resilience and well-being.
Her areas of focus are diverse, encompassing anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, behavior modification, and relational conflict. Sakira is also skilled in assessment and testing for ADHD and Autism. She serves a wide range of populations, including children, adolescents, adults, couples, individuals, and is experienced in working with multicultural and LGBTQ+ clients.
Sakira's therapeutic approach is multifaceted, incorporating various modalities and trainings. These include person-centered therapy, narrative therapy, play therapy, sand tray therapy, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Trust-Based Relational Intervention, and Internal Family Systems. This diverse toolkit allows her to tailor her approach to each client's unique needs and circumstances.
With a strong educational background, including a Bachelor of Science in English from the United States Air Force Academy and a Masters of Business from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, Sakira is currently pursuing a Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy at Brandman University/UMass Global, CA. This combination of military experience, business acumen, and specialized mental health training equips her with a unique perspective in helping clients navigate life's challenges and achieve personal growth.
