With a unique blend of art therapy and Adlerian psychology, Sarah Steward brings a creative and person-centered approach to her counseling practice. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (provisional), Sarah is passionate about helping individuals navigate life's challenges through innovative therapeutic techniques.
Sarah's journey to becoming a therapist is as diverse as her skillset. She holds a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Iowa, an M.L.A in Organizational Development from the University of St Thomas, an M.S. in Adult Learning & Organizational Performance from Drake University, and an M.A. in Art Therapy, Clinical Counseling, and Adlerian Psychology from Adler Graduate School. This rich educational background allows her to draw from multiple disciplines, offering clients a comprehensive and tailored therapeutic experience.
In her practice, Sarah works with a wide range of clients, addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, career planning, and caregiver support. She is also an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, providing a safe and supportive space for individuals of all identities. Sarah's approach recognizes that each person is an accumulation of their own life experiences and circumstances, allowing her to meet clients where they are and guide them towards their goals.
Sarah is trained in several evidence-based therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a powerful trauma treatment. She also incorporates art therapy techniques, leveraging the healing power of creative expression. Her therapeutic toolkit includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Therapy, among others, allowing her to adapt her approach to each client's unique needs.
Before transitioning to counseling, Sarah spent over 18 years in leadership, training and development, and project management in a corporate setting. This experience gives her a unique perspective on work-related stress, career transitions, and the challenges of balancing professional and personal life. Sarah's diverse background allows her to connect with clients from all walks of life, offering practical insights alongside therapeutic support.
As an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Art Therapy Association and the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, Sarah stays at the forefront of therapeutic advancements. Her role as Vice President of the Iowa Art Therapy Association demonstrates her commitment to advancing the field and providing the best possible care for her clients.
