Sylvia Flanagan
LMFT • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
About
With over two decades of experience guiding individuals and couples through life's challenges, Sylvia Flanagan brings a wealth of knowledge and a personalized approach to her therapy practice in San Diego. As a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Sylvia creates a comfortable environment where clients can relax, reflect, and examine patterns that have led to individual or relational dissatisfaction.
Sylvia's journey to becoming a therapist is as unique as her approach. After obtaining two Bachelor's degrees in Philosophy and Comparative Religions, with minor degrees in Psychology and Sociology, she spent time working at the Harvard Book Store and teaching English in Japan. These diverse experiences contribute to the breadth and richness of her counseling approach, allowing her to draw from a wide range of perspectives when working with clients.
Specializing in individual counseling, couples therapy, and premarital counseling, Sylvia tailors her methods to each client's unique needs and circumstances. Her areas of focus include anxiety, depression, relationship issues, emotional abuse, alcohol-related issues, codependency, infidelity, personal growth and development, communication and conflict resolution, anger management, self-esteem, grief and loss, spiritual issues, and LGBTQ issues.
Sylvia's therapeutic toolkit is as diverse as her clientele. She employs a variety of approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Existential Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Reality Therapy, Systemic Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Additionally, she is trained in EMDR and utilizes relaxation and meditation techniques when appropriate.
With licenses in California (LMFT 43147) and Arkansas (LMFT M1709030), as well as telehealth licenses in South Carolina and Florida, Sylvia offers both in-person and online counseling options. Her extensive experience, including eight years working with chronically mentally ill patients at Scripps Mercy Hospital and facilitating court-mandated domestic violence groups, has equipped her to handle a wide range of client needs.
Sylvia's approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that each person is the expert in their own life. She offers suggestions and highlights unhealthy patterns, but encourages clients to filter her guidance through their own lens of intuition and belief. This collaborative approach empowers clients to make new discoveries, reach their goals, and cultivate richer lives and more satisfying relationships.
Whether you're seeking to improve a relationship, get support during a difficult transition, or enhance personal growth, Sylvia Flanagan offers a supportive and insightful therapeutic experience. Her commitment to creating a comfortable environment, coupled with her diverse skill set and extensive experience, makes her a valuable resource for those navigating life's complexities in the San Diego area.
