Christine Truman
MD • Psychiatrist
About
For nearly two decades, Dr. Christine Truman has been at the forefront of women's mental health, specializing in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. As a board-certified adult psychiatrist, Dr. Truman brings a wealth of expertise in psychopharmacology, psychiatric diagnosis, and disease management to her practice, offering hope and healing to women navigating the complex emotional landscape of motherhood.
Dr. Truman's journey in reproductive psychiatry began during her residency at the Payne Whitney Clinic Women's Program and continued at Rhode Island Hospital before she settled in Virginia over 15 years ago. Her educational background is equally impressive, having graduated from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her psychiatric residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and the New York Presbyterian Hospital of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
A dedicated professional, Dr. Truman is actively involved in several organizations that champion women's mental health. She is a professional member of the Marce Society of North America (MONA), Postpartum Support International (PSI), and Postpartum Support Virginia (PSVA), where she served as a board member from 2012 to 2016. Her commitment to education extends beyond her practice; Dr. Truman has provided training in women's mental health topics across various educational settings, including professional meetings, medical grand rounds, and peer support trainings. She also serves as a community faculty member of Eastern Virginia Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
At Partners in Women's Mental Health, Dr. Truman offers both in-person and telepsychiatry services. Initial medication consultations are typically conducted face-to-face in the Norfolk office, with follow-up sessions available via a secure video platform. Her initial evaluations last approximately 45-60 minutes, followed by 15-20 minute follow-up sessions. This approach allows Dr. Truman to provide comprehensive care while offering flexibility to her patients.
Dr. Truman's practice philosophy centers on optimizing mental health while empowering patients with knowledge, understanding, and choice in their treatment decisions. She accepts new patients for evaluation and treatment while planning for a future pregnancy, during pregnancy, and during the first year postpartum. Her expertise in treating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) makes her an invaluable resource for women struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges during this critical period of their lives.
