Martin Shaw
LPC-S, LMFT • Licensed Professional Counselor - Supervisor
About
Hope is the foundation of Martin Shaw's counseling philosophy. As a National Board-Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Martin understands that hope is what drives change and healing in his clients' lives. With a career spanning over two decades, Martin has dedicated himself to helping individuals, families, and groups navigate through life's challenges and mental health concerns.
Martin's journey in the field of mental health began at Vernon College, where he earned his Associate's in Science in 2001. He then pursued his Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology at Midwestern State University, distinguishing himself as a member of the prestigious National College Honor Society, the Mortar Board, and Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. His academic excellence led to his acceptance into the Master's program, where he completed his Master's of Arts in Counseling in 2006.
Throughout his career, Martin has developed expertise in treating a wide range of mental health issues. He conducts weekly therapy sessions with children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with various disorders, including Adjustment Disorders, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymic Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Cognitive Disorders, and personality disorders. His approach is client-centered, utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and interpersonal techniques to address each client's unique needs.
Martin's commitment to child and adolescent therapy is evident in his use of play therapy, specifically the child-centered play therapy approach. This technique allows younger clients to express themselves in a safe and nurturing environment. Additionally, Martin has received specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, equipping him to help clients process and heal from traumatic experiences.
In June 2014, Martin expanded his professional capabilities by completing the requirements for Supervision of Licensed Professional Counselor Interns. This achievement allows him to mentor and guide the next generation of counselors, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience.
Martin's diverse professional background includes work at various institutions, such as the 82nd medical group, University of Texas Medical Branch, Wichita County MHMR, and Rose Street Mental Health Care, where he has been in private practice since 2008. This varied experience has honed his ability to work with patients of different backgrounds and needs, adapting his approach to best serve each individual.
At the core of Martin's practice is the belief that counselors are catalysts for change, not the agents of change themselves. He views the counseling relationship as a collaborative process, where he serves as a supportive sounding board for his clients. Martin's empathetic listening skills and trust in the counseling process create a safe space for clients to explore their challenges and work towards positive change.
Martin Shaw's approach to therapy is both professional and deeply personal. He understands that the path to healing is unique for each individual, and he is committed to walking alongside his clients on their journey towards mental health and well-being. Whether working with a child through play therapy, helping an adult navigate depression, or guiding a family through relational challenges, Martin brings hope, expertise, and a genuine desire to help to every session.
