Ian Schiffman
LCSW • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
About
Unleashing the power of play in therapy, Ian Schiffman, LCSW, has pioneered an innovative approach that combines the immersive world of tabletop role-playing games with evidence-based therapeutic techniques. As a licensed clinical social worker and therapeutic tabletop group leader, Ian has developed a unique niche in mental health care that speaks to both his professional expertise and personal passions.
Ian's journey in mental health began at The University of Utah, where he earned his Master's Degree in Social Work. However, it was his creative vision that truly set his practice apart. Recognizing the potential of tabletop gaming as a therapeutic tool, Ian developed two groundbreaking therapeutic groups. These groups harness the engaging nature of role-playing games to promote essential life skills in children and adolescents, including social skills, frustration tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and cognitive flexibility.
With a particular passion for working with neurodiverse populations, especially those on the Autism spectrum, Ian's approach is both innovative and inclusive. His therapeutic methods create a safe, engaging environment where clients can explore social dynamics, practice problem-solving, and develop emotional resilience through the lens of collaborative storytelling and imaginative play.
When not leading therapy sessions or facilitating tabletop groups, Ian's personal interests align closely with his professional life. He enjoys gaming and comics, reflecting his ability to connect with clients through shared interests. In a charming personal note that speaks to his approachable nature, Ian is known to enjoy snuggling with his hedgehog, aptly named Bertrand Danger Snufflebottom – a detail that often helps put younger clients at ease.
Ian Schiffman's practice stands as a testament to the power of creativity in therapy. By bridging the gap between traditional therapeutic techniques and the immersive world of tabletop gaming, he offers a truly unique and effective approach to mental health care, particularly for neurodiverse individuals and those who thrive in more interactive, imaginative therapeutic settings.
