With a passion for meeting clients where they are, Dr. Nyasha Chikowore brings a unique blend of cultural sensitivity and evidence-based practices to her work as a post-doctoral fellow at the Capital Center for Psychotherapy and Wellness. Her approach is tailored to each individual, drawing from a diverse toolkit that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents (IPT-A).
Dr. Chikowore's expertise spans a wide range of client needs, from children as young as 5 to adults grappling with complex life challenges. Her areas of focus include depression, anxiety, ADHD, sexual trauma, family discord, traumatic brain injury, disordered eating, gender and sexual identity questions, academic issues, and relationship problems. With a particular passion for working with the LGBTQ population, racial minorities, and musicians, Dr. Chikowore's Zimbabwean heritage fuels her desire to support immigrant, non-immigrant, and third-culture individuals navigating life in America.
Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Chikowore is committed to community outreach, conducting workshops on vital topics such as coping skills, depression, and career exploration. Her dedication to promoting mental health awareness extends to her authorship of the children's book "Giraffe Asks For Help," which encourages help-seeking behaviors in young children aged 4-8.
Dr. Chikowore's academic journey includes a master's degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Baltimore and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington, D.C. This rigorous educational background, combined with her diverse clinical experiences, allows her to offer comprehensive individual, family, couples, and group therapy services.
At the heart of Dr. Chikowore's practice is a commitment to cultural competence and a belief in the power of tailored therapeutic approaches. Whether utilizing Multicultural Counseling techniques or drawing on her own multicultural background, she strives to create a safe, understanding space where clients can explore their challenges and work towards meaningful growth and healing.
