Tom La Grave
LMFT • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
About
From the depths of addiction to the heights of healing, Tom La Grave, LMFT, embodies the transformative power of recovery and resilience. As a former Navy SEAL with 32 years of sobriety, Tom brings a unique blend of military discipline and deep empathy to his therapeutic practice. His journey from battling personal demons to becoming a beacon of hope for others is not just inspiring—it's the foundation of his approach to therapy.
Tom's path to becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist was forged through personal struggle and triumph. After his military career in the '80s as a Navy SEAL, Tom faced and overcame his own addiction issues. This experience didn't define him; instead, it empowered him to help others facing similar challenges. Tom's philosophy is rooted in the understanding that addiction can't be beaten physically, but must be conquered by embracing one's full range of emotions and accepting emotional pain.
With a diverse background in counseling, Tom has worked across a spectrum of populations, each contributing to his comprehensive approach to mental health. He began by working with youth, transitioned to assisting the developmentally disabled, and then moved on to counseling convicts in correctional facilities. His expertise culminated in his role as a Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) for present-day Special Forces Operators. This varied experience has given Tom unique insights into the commonalities between PTSD, substance abuse, stress, conflict, depression, and anxiety.
Tom's therapeutic approach is distinctive, blending the teamwork ethos ingrained in his SEAL training with his clinical expertise as a troubleshooter. He firmly believes in the SEAL mantra: "none of us is as good as all of us." This collaborative spirit infuses his therapy sessions, where he works alongside his clients to navigate their challenges and uncover their strengths. Tom specializes in addressing PTSD, substance abuse, stress, conflict, depression, and anxiety, using evidence-based techniques tailored to each individual's needs.
In these unsettled times, Tom La Grave stands as a testament to the possibility of change and growth. He doesn't just offer therapy; he offers hope, grounded in his own lived experience and professional expertise. Tom's practice is more than a service—it's a partnership in healing, where clients can expect understanding, challenge, and the unwavering support of someone who has walked the path from struggle to strength.
