About

At the heart of Mary Jo Pedersen's therapeutic approach lies a profound understanding of the psychological overwhelm that can grip families and individuals. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and the Director of Central Coast Counseling Center, Mary Jo brings two decades of counseling experience to her practice, specializing in helping families recover from addictions and trauma.

Mary Jo's expertise shines in her work with couples who are "trauma triggered" by Addictive Family Dynamics. She provides a safe space for couples to re-evaluate their issues and learn how to engage in constructive dialogue rather than spiraling into destructive patterns that may lead to divorce. Her approach is rooted in identifying and addressing approximately 45 Destructive Family Dynamics that she has observed throughout her career.

Understanding the complex nature of trauma and addiction, Mary Jo emphasizes the importance of a Healing Community in the recovery process. She sees her role as a Marriage and Family Therapist as one crucial part of this community, working alongside doctors and support services to provide comprehensive care. Her methodology focuses on four key areas: identifying true psychological overwhelm, understanding the "split self" phenomenon, recognizing fight-flight-freeze responses, and addressing the needs of the inner child.

Mary Jo's vision extends beyond individual therapy sessions. She aims to equip families and communities with the tools to identify destructive processes, manage emotional overwhelm, and engage in constructive dialogues. Her ultimate goal is to decrease divorces, manage addictions and medical issues, and improve parenting through skill-building and increased self-awareness.

In addition to her extensive experience, Mary Jo is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a powerful technique she uses to help clients process trauma and regain control of their lives. Her comprehensive approach encompasses guided imagery, meditation, and breathing techniques to help clients find internal peace and navigate the emotional challenges they face. With Mary Jo Pedersen, clients can expect a therapist who is not only highly skilled but also deeply committed to fostering healing and growth in individuals, couples, and families.
